Future Focus & Type 2 Diabetes

Future focus sounds wishy washy, doesn't it? Of course it does - if you limit yourself to what most people understand by this. Thinking positive. Picking yourself up when the chips are down.

This approach is entirely inadequate for changing your health mindset, because it assumes that you need to anchor yourself to the problem called type 2 diabetes in order to free yourself from it. That you must solve it.

Real future focus is about making type 2 irrelevant.

Imagine that you are not very good at a certain subject at school. You get put in a special remedial class for this subject. Each lesson begins with a reminder of how hard it is to pass this subject, and you better study hard. But never forget that it's your fault you are no good at this subject. Oh yes, and you are tested every day.

How well would you do in that class?

Not very well is my guess.

Now imagine that you are told that generations of your ancestors were actually masters of this subject, and if there had been school in their lifetimes, they would have got A* grades.

The subject is of course Health.

Now imagine that it's the school holidays. You go to Health Summer Camp. But instead of having to attend lessons to catch up and raise your bad grades, you have an encouraging tutor who doesn’t know about how bad your grades have been up to this point.

Your tutor starts every session by playing a tailor-made movie of what your life is like when you have optimum health. Their job is to help you start living as if you are already an A* student.

Think of people who have had big obstacles to overcome, but still went out and changed things:

Malala - didn’t let being shot by fundamentalists stop her inspiring millions

Winston Churchill - didn’t let alcoholism stop him leading Britain in WW2

Oprah Winfrey - didn’t let an abusive childhood stop her becoming one of the most successful media moguls in the world

Stephen Fry - didn’t let being bipolar or growing up in a homophobic Britain stop him becoming an actor, writer and president of the mental health charity Mind.

If these people had tried to solve their issues, they’d never have gone out there and done remarkable things. They created a different reality for themselves independent of their problems.

But I’m Not Oprah or Winston!

The difference between them and you is that they found a way to act in spite of their resistance.

You too can act in spite of your resistance.

Here’s how:

At Health Camp, Your tutor does something unique. They don't try to squash that resistance, they encourage you to acknowledge it. They explain that most people have a part of their mind that resists what they long for, and that instead of trying to squash it, we can use the difference between the ideal health movie and your life now to create tension.

The tension is not bad but actually incredibly helpful.  Like an elastic band that has been pulled tight, tension seeks resolution.

In this way, tension creates momentum towards optimum health. We can send the elastic band of momentum flying towards a life free of diabetes

This is how you make type 2 diabetes irrelevant.
